In the realm of endurance and toughness he chatted and played a game with his aide while Hua Tuo was scraping poison off of his bone with a knife, tore an arrow out of his arm with his teeth, and fought 80 bouts with Xu Huang before he started to suffer from his poisoned wound (it was still healing). He also defeated Ji Ling in 30 bouts, beat Guan Hai after a few dozen clashes, and killed lots of randoms including Bian Xi, who threw what seems to be a meteor hammer at him which he "brushed aside" with his sword. Guan Yu killed Hua Xiong who matched Sun Jian and stomped Zu Mao (the novel gave him twin swords and listed him as a top general alongside Huang Gai, Han Dang, and Cheng Pu), as well as killing other top generals. One thing that separates Guan Yu from the pack is his wins, a lot of top duelists drew with loads of people but never beat anyone good. In terms of a complete package, you could make the argument that Zhao Yun, Pang De, maybe Taishi Ci and others are the better overall package because of their melee and ranged skill (we all remember how Huang Zhong had Guan Yu at his mercy). It's true that a lot of generals are his equal but Guan Yu is tougher than almost anyone in the novel, braver than many top generals, (even people like Xu Chu have lost their cool), he has an intimidation factor that most elite generals haven't displayed, in terms of ranged skill I can't remember a time he did anything particularly impressive. A good general for sure and a strong duelist, but one of many. So even within the confines of the novel, Guan Yu seems a bit overrated. That they were even able to do so safely shows their level of skill and strength. The other duels in the novel against those named characters, they fought and the other party "drew off" after a time. The only Wei general mentioned above Guan Yu actually killed was Pang De, and that was a result of flooding rather than a duel. ![]() The only Tiger general who wasn't equal to Guan Yu in military might was Wei Yan. Xu Chu (this guy was a boss in the novels and went even with Ma Chao, which Zhang Fei also did) Huang Zhong (would have won if he were younger fam) Pang De (would have killed Guan Yu if not for magic doctor man) Lu Bu (fought the 3 brothers to a standstill) That’s why a Gan Ning or Zhang Fei has the reputation they do because Cao Cao had the imperial army & the most populous & amp amp prosperous cities in China under his belt but Sun Quan & amp amp Liu Bei could not be routed out.Įven within the novel, there were plenty of other generals of approximately the same strength as Guan Yu. ![]() If Guan Yu had the resources & support of a Yue Jin or Li Tong by serving under Cao Cao what would his historical deeds have been? When he did serve Cao Cao, he has one of like the four historical dual victories as many officers dueled but both sides often retreated before death for moral reasons. But Cao Cao, Zhou Yu, & Liu Bei some of the most brilliant minds of the time considered “Lord Guan” a one in a million type of field general, though those field generals who forced him to retreat had far more troops, much better supplied, more fortified camps, & so force. Often in this forum Guan Yu is one of the historical figures often considered overrated in general because historically he had failings against Li Tong, Niu Jin, Yue Jin, Xu Huang, Wen Ping, & ultimately Lu Meng.
